With this tool, we can make up for the balance stimuli that the child did not receive in infancy, or not as much as needed. It's never too late to start using it, it can still be very helpful even in upper primary school.
Rotations:
Spaceship: the child sits cross-legged in the cone, holding on with both hands, their bottom in the indentation, head tilted back. This keeps them stable and prevents slipping (unless intentional). We rotate the cone with both hands, and the child can feel like they're in a spinning spaceship. Let's also recite rhymes, they love it! (Even my fifth graders demand it.)
Revolving door: we spin it along the vertical axis of rotation.
Centrifuge: the child sits in a stable position in the cone. Carefully turn it so that their head is down, then spin it with sweeping motions, making sure their head stays down throughout. (This spin should only be used where balance stimuli were truly missed – you'll know because the child will be grinning from ear to ear during this super-fast rotation.)
Rinsing: if we can manage it, hold the cone by both edges and tilt it so that only its tip touches the ground. Gently shake it, as if washing lettuce.
Little boat: if our child desires something special, take it with us to the beach or on holiday, as the cone floats on water and can function as a little boat. It's important that the rotations are continuous and not too slow. Therefore, assess whether you can comfortably lift it if a heavier child is sitting in it, as the exercises are not back-friendly.
